Study reveals gap in HIV testing knowledge among college students

Most college students understand how they can prevent the transmission of HIV but are less knowledgeable about HIV testing, according to a new University of Georgia study.  Su-I Hou, associate professor in the UGA College of Public Health, surveyed more than 500 students and found that they scored higher on general questions related to HIV and AIDS (82 percent correct) than items specifically related to HIV testing (72 percent correct).   » Read more

Recently, Dr.  Bob Galen, Associate Dean in the College of Public Health met with Mr. Benon Kalema, newly-appointed head of the Planning Office at Nkumba University ( Entebbe, Uganda), about a possible collaboration between the Public Health Institute at Nkumba with UGA on an HIV/AIDS project.

Study: Child maltreatment victims lose two years of quality of life

Child maltreatment is associated with reductions in quality of life even decades later, according to a new University of Georgia study that finds that – on average – victims lose at least two years of quality of life. UGA College of Public Health associate professor Phaedra Corso and her colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed surveys of more than 6,000 people to assess the deficits in quality of life that victims suffer. The Georgia Geriatric Education Center to Host Conference

End-of-life care is mediocre in Georgia and across the country, according to a nationwide “report card” published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In an effort to address this issue, the Georgia Geriatric Education Center announces “Improving Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Frail Older Adults,” a conference to be held in Athens on May 16-17.

IHMD: Risk of Nuclear Attack on Rise

Concerned that not enough attention is being paid to the risk of a nuclear attack, a Senate committee yesterday looked at the consequences of such a terrorist strike in Washington -- and said that more could be done to save lives.  A hearing, called by the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, featured charts showing the horrific effects of a small nuclear device detonating near the White House. It was the panel's third session in recent months on the threat of a nuclear explosion.    » Read more
