The Department of Health Promotion and Behavior (HPB), through research, teaching, and service, prepares professionals in process-related competencies in health promotion programming that are based on a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the determinants of health. Health promotion efforts are directed at influencing or facilitating health-related behavior, advocating public health policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, developing personal skills, and reorienting health services.
In 1974, Health Promotion and Behavior (HPB) became independent from the department of Health and Physical Education as the Department of Health and Safety and was approved to offer bachelors and masters degrees in Health Education and a Masters in Safety Education (primarily for driver's education instructors). In 1987, Health and Safety became the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior. In 2004, HPB became part of the College of Public Health.
