The College of Public Health is comprised of four departments and two institutes. It consists of departments in Environmental Health Science; Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Health Policy and Management; Health Promotion and Behavior; the Institute of Gerontology, and the Institute for Health Management and Mass Destruction Defense.

Leonard Poon, professor of health policy and management and director of UGA’s Institute of Gerontology, gained attention for his early research on aging and cognition, particularly for his work on memory and early dementia. But it is his remarkable 20-year program of research on the oldest old—individuals who live to age 100 or beyond—that has showcased his exceptional capacity for creativity and innovation. » Read more
Amid renewed calls to consider reducing the legal drinking age, a new University of Georgia study finds that lower drinking ages increase unplanned pregnancies and pre-term births among young people. “Our findings suggest that a lower drinking age increases risky sexual behavior among young people, and that leads to more unplanned pregnancies that result in premature birth and low birth weight,” said study author Angela Fertig, assistant professor in the UGA College of Public Health. “The take-home message is that when it’s easier for young people to get alcohol, birth outcomes are worse.” » Read more

Corso, associate professor in the department of health policy and management, and Dr. Xiangming Fang from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control were awarded the 2008 Kaafee Billah Memorial Award in Economics for their paper titled Child maltreatment, youth violence and intimate partner violence: Developmental relationships. The paper was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2007. » Read more
