Institute Director Recieves Phi Kappa Phi Award


The Institute of Gerontology congratulates Dr. Leonard Poon, Institute Director, for being the 2008 Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 32 Love of Learning faculty recipient.

The Love of Learning Award was established in 2003 in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter, a prestigious honor society, at the University of Georgia. The award acknowledges outstanding contributions to the awardee's lifetime accomplishments in her/his field of study.

Leonard W. Poon is a Professor of Health Policy and Management in the College of Public Health and Professor of Life Span Developmental Psychology in the Department of Psychology. He is also the Director of the Institute of Gerontology. He has directed a federally-funded Georgia Centenarian Study since 1988, which is a collaboration among researchers from nine universities, and the Georgia Geriatric Education Center. He co-founded an International Centenarian Consortium in 1994, which is a cross-cultural collaboration among nine countries. Dr. Poon obtained a B.S. in Engineering from San Joe State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Experimental Psychology from the University of Denver. Prior to coming to UGA, he was a faculty member at the Harvard University Medical School, in the Department of Psychiatry.
