Graduate Certificate in Gerontology
The Certificate courses help students prepare to tackle the challenges of our aging population, whatever the student’s interest may be.
The Institute of Gerontology is the hub for coordinating and conducting The University of Georgia's education, research, and outreach services associated with the study of aging and older adults. Through its 30-plus member university-wide Faculty of Gerontology, the Institute collaborates with educators and researchers within Georgia, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Does pregnancy influence a woman’s health in her post-reproductive stage of life? In our cohort of Mexican-origin women, high gravidity is associated with slower walking speed and difficulty rising from a seated position at 70 years of age. This study contributes to a growing literature on the influence of fertility on late-life health. These findings suggest that health care focused on the post-partum period could lessen a woman’s burden of disability in old age. Older adults with intact walking ability use less healthcare. See the powerpoint presentation for more information.

Gerontology is the study of aging and older adults. Long life is a direct result of public health. The science of gerontology has evolved as longevity has improved. Researchers in this field are diverse. Our students are trained in basic science, social science and statistics. Our graduates work in public and private sector jobs. With these tools, we create the solutions needed by our society.
