Pregnancy and Aging

Does pregnancy influence a woman’s health in her post-reproductive stage of life? In our cohort of Mexican-origin women, high gravidity is associated with slower walking speed and difficulty rising from a seated position at 70 years of age. This study contributes to a growing literature on the influence of fertility on late-life health. These findings suggest that health care focused on the post-partum period could lessen a woman’s burden of disability in old age. Older adults with intact walking ability use less healthcare.
