The Institute, formerly the Gerontology Center, was established in 1964 by an all-university committee commissioned by the President of the University. The Institute joined the College of Public Health in 2005. The Institute is charged to initiate, maintain, and collaborate in instruction, research, and outreach associated with aging and the aged.

Through its 45-member Faculty of Gerontology, the Institute collaborates with educators and researchers within Georgia, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Current activities in the Institute include:
