Topic: Measurement and Testing with Pain in Animals Description: Clinical assessment of pain in veterinary patients is difficult, as there is no gold standard from which to work.  Numerous methods have been explored, and nearly every researcher reinvents the wheel with a new scoring system for pain.  This talk will explore the challenges of measurement in the absence of a gold standard and the strategies employed to evaluate pain in clinical veterinary patients.  These principles can be extrapolated to assessment of any subjective domain where verbal reporting is impossible (infants, disabled, psychopathology) or challenging. Erik Hofmeister, DVM, DACVA, DECVAA, MA Associate Professor, Veterinary Anesthesiology Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery College of Veterinary Medicine University of Georgia Monday February 13, 2012 from 12:00 – 1:00 Coverdell Building Room 175 Pizza will be served!  Bring your own drinks!

Safe Kids Athens is dedicated to preventing unintentional childhood injury.  The problem is clear: more children aged 1 to 14 die from accidents such as motor vehicle crashes, drowning, suffocation, and fires than any other cause.  By working together, we can prevent childhood injury in our community through education, awareness, and advocacy.   Address for directions: Athens Regional Medical Center 1199 Prince Avenue Athens, GA 30606   New Partnership: The Traffic Safety Research and Evaluation Group (TSREG) is a strong supporter of this coalition.  TSREG’s vision is dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality caused by highway traffic crashes.  As a local stakeholder in traffic safety, Safe Kids Athens’ partnership with TSREG is an invaluable resource for the Athens community.  We look forward to future collaboration and many successful events with Safe Kids Athens and we extend a cordial invitation to any interested media representatives to make this event a successful one.
