Muktha Natrajan was recently named a 2011 Gates Camridge Scholar. She is one of two Georgians, and among 90 students from 29 countries that have received this scholarship. Gates scholars are academically outstanding students who show leadership potential, a commitment to improving the lives of others and a good academic fit with Cambridge. They are international and pursue a wide range of academic subjects at Cambridge. Gates alumni are spread throughout the world and pursue a multitude of careers.
Muktha completed a combined bachelor’s/master’s program at the University of Georgia in May 2011. She earned a BS in genetics and an MPH in environmental health. She conducted research on neural stem cell and progenitor cell cultures at UGA in Dr. Steven Stice's lab, and developed a passion for neuroscience. Along with her research experience, she spearheaded efforts for sustainable solutions through the Go Green Alliance, a coalition of UGA environmental groups. Muktha also worked as a grant reviewer with Promote Africa, a non-profit that supports community development projects in Africa. She plans to pursue a PhD at the University of Cambridge under Dr. Robin Franklin in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. In Dr. Franklin's lab, she would like to combine her interests in neuroscience and the environment by studying the effects of extrinsic factors on neural cell growth and development. She eventually intends to work as a researcher and policy analyst at the National Institutes of Health.
