Set for June 10th - June 12th from 6 PM to 9 PM. Dinner and refreshments will be provided.
Required Course:
(1) HPAM 8800 - REGT* Leadership in Public Health - 3 credit hours
Elective Courses: Choose either 2 or 3 more courses to total 12 credit hours
(2) GLOB 7750 - REGT* Global Perspectives on Health & Risk Communication - 3 credit hours
(3) HPRB 7160 - REGT* Statistical Methods in Program Evaluation - 3 credit hours - Please note that this will be a 2-week intensive course (27 hours per week or 54 hours total). All class time will be spent in the University of Haifa computer lab. Those students who wish to take this course but are also taking overlapping courses will be able to receive tutorials for classes missed during those two weeks.
(4) GLOB 8500 (Call # 34985) - REGT* Comparative Global Health Systems - 3 credit hours
(5) PBHL 7560 - REGT (Call # 74987)* - Public Health Internship - 6 credit hours required for MPH students and 3 credit hours allowed for non-MPH students
Estimated Cost: Currently $1,500 plus tuition, airfare, daily meals, incidentials, and souvenirs (this cost is subject to change due to unforeseen changes in the program itinerary and exchange rate fluctuations)

Program fees are based on current exchange rates, in-country transportation to cultural venues accompanied by tour guides, in-country transportation to internship sites, lodging, student health insurance, medical/political evacuation insurance coverage, and individual mobile phones

Current summer tuition rates for MPH students is $332/credit hour (12 credits)

Airfare: Current rates, according to Kayak.com, range from $1659 to $1743 flying into Tel Aviv International Airport

Daily meals: University of Haifa housing includes a fully equipped kitchen; a small grocery store is also in walking distance from campus housing providing an inexpensive and convenient way for students to eat
Location: Students will reside in the Talia Dorms on the University of Haifa campus. Female and male students will live separately in suites with individual bedrooms/bathrooms and a communal kitchen. During the weekends, we will be taking cultural excursions to various cities and regions including: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Akko, Nahariya, Akko, Bet Shan, Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, Megiddo, and Rosh Hanikra.

Course Descriptions
GLOB 8500: Comparative Global Health Systems (3 credits)
Learning Objectives: On completing the class, graduate students should be able to:

Understand the foundations of health systems

Compare health systems in high, middle, and low income countries

Identify best practices in health systems that would serve high, middle, & low income countries
-
Conceive models for an “ideal” health system
-
Develop a model for an improved US health system
-
Develop leadership skills and knowledge to advocate for an improved health system
Class format includes:

Internet-based education, including peer-to-peer learning

Presentation-based assignment

Guest lectures in class and via video distance learning
HPAM 8800: Leadership in Public Health (3 credits)
Learning Objectives: On completing the class, graduate students should be able to:

Differentiate and analyze different leadership styles, their strengths and weaknesses
-
Identify specific leaders and analyze their strengths and weaknesses
-
Understand the student's own leadership style and have an introspective perspective on strengths and weaknesses
-
Demonstrate skills in leading change efforts and running meetings
GLOB 7750: Health and Risk Communication (3 credits)
Learning Objectives: On completing the class, graduate students should be able to:

Understand ways in which health and risk communication theories can be applied to global health problem solving.

Explain cultural factors accounting for cross-national differences in talking about health and risk
-
Understand communication practices that facilitate international health collaborations
-
Become familiar with culturally-appropriate practices that promote health innovations in international settings
-
Appreciate the role of edutainment in international health and risk communication
-
Appreciate the role of new technologies in global health communication
-
Become familiar with social marketing theories and practices applicable in international settings
-
Acquire competencies in constructing culturally appropriate messages to mitigate risk
-
Become conversant with techniques of crisis communication in international settings.
HPRB 7160: Statistical Methods in Program Evaluation (3 credits)
Learning Objectives: On completing the class, graduate students should be able to:

Measure health risk behavior through data collection
-
Using secondary sourcs of data, students will be able assess research needs and determine the benefits of using exisitng sources of data
-
Through primary datea collection, students will be able to determine the benefits of collecting data
-
Understand the basics of SPSS (using a common, heuristic dataset - taught assuming that students have no previous SPSS knowledge)
PBHL 7560: Public Health Internship (6 credits): We cannot guarantee every student an internship experience. Depending on how many internship positions are available, we will be conducting a thorough evaluation of each students' professional experience and knowledge base prior to assignment. Those who are not placed will have to register for the other courses to total 12 credit hours.

MPH students: 300 total supervised contact hours at a relevant health site/community-based health center in either Haifa or Nahariya

Internship will count towards MPH internship requirement

Non-MPH students: Hours will vary depending on your course load

On average, approximately 30 hours/week

Transportation will be provided by the Program
The Study Abroad Experience
University of Haifa and University of Georgia students will be together to share the classroom experience, sharing ideas and learning from one another. Please note that the class WILL be in English.
